MOTORCYCLE SAFETY TIPS

  • Follow all rules of the road.
  • Take a motorcycle safety or rider-training course, particularly if you are inexperienced.
  • Wear protective gear, specifically a helmet, which lowers a rider's risk of traumatic brain injury by 67%, and reduces the risk of fatal injury by 29%.
  • Do not drink and drive. About one half of all single-vehicle fatal accidents involve alcohol. Motorcycles can be tricky to control, and even the most experienced rider can lose control of a motorcycle, even if alcohol is not involved.
  • Make sure you are properly licensed. 33% of motorcycle riders killed in crashes are either improperly or not licensed. This is the only manner in which the riders and the State can make certain the driver is equipped with the proper knowledge and skill to operate a motorcycle.
